Administrator's Message

Greetings Village School Community!

Well that was a bizarre (and slippery) break in the school action! We’re hoping everyone fared ok through the ice storm and we were so glad to have everyone back for one short day last week.

That said, let’s get this party started back up! Grandfriends Day, a new Hold Drill, a collab between Lane County Public Health and the VS Middle School, Heart of the Village, and a rock band concert are all on the upcoming calendar. We are taking full advantage of our rainy winter months. Please check in with Chrissy or see below if you would like to volunteer for Grandfriend’s Day or Heart of the Village!

With regards to the new Hold drill to be held on January 25th: Our safety committee has done a lot of work on developing our safety protocols on campus. We are now aligned with The Standard Response Protocol K12. We will be practicing the Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter drills, alongside Fire and Earthquake drills, to ensure that our students and community members are safe in the case of an emergency. A Hold drill is used to practice for situations that require students and staff to remain in their classrooms or stay out of common areas. This may be because of an altercation or medical emergency outside the classroom.

Here’s to hoping these winter months are treating you with continued health and happiness!

Sincerely,

Roz, Shannon, Andy

Annual Giving Campaign & Other Site Improvement News

Thanks to everyone who has donated so far to our annual giving campaign!  You can donate by card without fees or by check. We hope you will join us in bringing more excitement and fun for students on the playground.

We also wanted to let you know that our site planning committee met last week to discuss enhancements to our playground including a ramp allowing ADA access to the playground, climbing features by the sand play area, a dry creek bed, and more. A Universtiy of Oregon landscape architect student, Giffin Glastonbury, is helping us develop ideas to carry out these plans. We look forward to more input from Giffin in the coming weeks.

Importance of 100% Participation: Unlike regular district schools, The Village School receives no dedicated funding for facilities improvements. With the expenditure of the last pandemic funds, we will be relying more on local grants & donations for facilities improvements.  If everyone contributes, regardless of amount, this helps grantors know that our school is appreciated by our community and thus worthy of their grants.

Heart of the Village

Heart of the Village planning is in full swing! The Heart of the Village festival is happening this year on Saturday, February 10th (the day after Grandfriends Day) from 11am - 3pm. This festival is a hands-on showcase of music, arts, crafts, and food from Village School students and the community. There will be games, a bake sale, musical cakes, musical performances, a photo booth, crafts, and a silent auction. It's the biggest parent council fundraiser of the school year and a whole lot of fun!

This wonderful festival is only possible because of our parent volunteers. Please take a look at the signup sheet below, and pick a shift that works for you!

Grandfriends Day

Grandfriends Day is happening this year on Friday, February 9th from 8:30 to 12:30. Please let the Grandfriends (grandparents or nearby grand friends) in your life know that they can RSVP here or on the Village School Website. We look forward to having them join us!

Please join us and send questions and ideas to parentcouncil@eugenevillageschool.org.

The notes from past meetings can be found here (updated).

Every Village School parent and guardian is a part of Parent Council - Parent Council Meetings are open to all parents and guardians on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

You can also engage with Village School families on the Parent Council Facebook page, The Village Vine!

Volunteering

Please reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org with any questions about volunteering! We ask families to contribute 40 hours of volunteer hours per year, and single parent households to contribute 20 hours. If you would like to know how many volunteer hours you have accumulated this year, please let Chrissy know. There are many events coming up, as well as classroom and kitchen opportunities that can help to meet these hours.

  • Heart of the Village will be held on Saturday, February 10th. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Parent Council. Please sign up for a volunteering shift here.

Another way to contribute to our school community is by attending Parent Council Meetings! We will be holding our next meeting on Tuesday, February 13th at 6pm in the Village School Library. If you would like to attend virtually, here is the Zoom link

*Please make sure to sign in, grab a volunteer badge, and sign out at the office when you volunteer
