Administrator's Message

Greetings Village School Community!

Last Friday we had our first ever middle school enrichment program rock band performance-The Rip Van Winkle’s played four songs for the whole school and they SLAYED, no cap. Our favorite was Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. Great job, Winkles!

Also a great big thanks to Lane County Public Health and Rebecca Macemon for bringing a first of its kind collab to the VS middle school. Great job!

It’s been a minute since we checked in about the night skies and one of my favorite stars of all time, Sirius, aka the dog star, is a prominent feature right now! The Egyptian calendar centered around Sirius, though they called it Sothis. They used the dog star’s appearance to predict the rising floodwaters of the Nile and, as well, this appearance was announced by the Pharaoh's primary advisor to herald the start of the lunar calendar year. This lunar year regulated religious and everyday affairs throughout Egyptian civilization.

Here in Eugene, Sirius will climb the southeastern skies and peak in the southern sky at around 10pm. This is the brightest star in the night sky, and is outshined only by a few planets and the international space station. Near Orion’s belt, this star is hard to miss!

Speaking of hard to miss…Heart of the Village, our biggest event of the year, is coming up! We definitely need more volunteers to pull this off. If you’ve got some time, what a great way to show up for the community! Check in with Chrissy or check the rest of this issue for ways to step up and help out, and thank you in advance!

Thank you for being an ever present, ever thoughtful, ever vibrant community. We love you!

Sincerely,

Roz, Shannon, Andy

Heart of the Village

Heart of the Village is just over one week away! It is happening this year on Saturday, February 10th (the day after Grandfriends Day) from 11am - 3pm. This festival is a hands-on showcase of music, arts, crafts, and food from Village School students and the community. There will be games, a bake sale, musical cakes, musical performances, a photo booth, crafts, and a silent auction. It's the biggest parent council fundraiser of the school year and a whole lot of fun!

It is imperative that we fill the remaining volunteer shifts to ensure that our beloved event is a success! Please take a look at the signup sheet below, and pick a shift that works for you!

Heart of the Village Tickets Pre-Sale

Purchase your Heart of the Village Admissions Tickets and Lunch Tickets in advance here to skip the line! Once you purchase your tickets, we will have them ready for you to pick up in the office.

Volunteering

Please reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org with any questions about volunteering! We ask families to contribute 40 hours of volunteer hours per year, and single parent households to contribute 20 hours. If you would like to know how many volunteer hours you have accumulated this year, please let Chrissy know. There are many events coming up, as well as classroom and kitchen opportunities that can help to meet these hours.

  • Heart of the Village will be held on Saturday, February 10th. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Parent Council. Please sign up for a volunteering shift here.

Another way to contribute to our school community is by attending Parent Council Meetings! We will be holding our next meeting on Tuesday, February 13th at 6pm in the Village School Library. If you would like to attend virtually, here is the Zoom link

*Please make sure to sign in, grab a volunteer badge, and sign out at the office when you volunteer

Annual Giving Campaign & Other Site Improvement News

Thanks to everyone who has donated so far to our annual giving campaign!  You can donate by card without fees or by check. We hope you will join us in bringing more excitement and fun for students on the playground.

We also wanted to let you know that our site planning committee met the other week to discuss enhancements to our playground including a ramp allowing ADA access to the playground, climbing features by the sand play area, a dry creek bed, and more. A University of Oregon landscape architect student, Giffin Glastonbury, is helping us develop ideas to carry out these plans. We look forward to more input from Giffin in the coming weeks.

Importance of 100% Participation: Unlike regular district schools, The Village School receives no dedicated funding for facilities improvements. With the expenditure of the last pandemic funds, we will be relying more on local grants & donations for facilities improvements.  If everyone contributes, regardless of amount, this helps grantors know that our school is appreciated by our community and thus worthy of their grants.

Grandfriends Day

Grandfriends Day is happening this year on Friday, February 9th from 8:30 to 12:30. Please let the Grandfriends (grandparents or nearby grand friends) in your life know that they can RSVP here or on the Village School Website. We look forward to having them join us!

Rock Band

The Rip Van Winkles rocked out in front of the entire school this past Friday. We are all excitedly waiting to hear when they will perform next! Thank you to all the rock band members and to Jon Bilenki for putting this together and for being their amazing teacher!
