Administrator's Message

Greetings Village School Community!

We are well on our way into week two. Things are going great! Students are learning (or remembering) the ropes, kindness culture is growing each day, the Rose Ceremony was beautiful, welcoming a new class of grades students into the fold, and we are growing in leaps and bounds! We can hardly wait to see what happens next.

A few nuts and bolts for your consideration:

  • Staff are not on and doors to the school do not open until 8am. If you have an extenuating circumstance and need to drop off earlier than 8am, please get in touch with the office so that we can make a plan and all be on the same page.

  • Picture day is coming up! Look for details for this upcoming event.

  • Check out these awesome VS students taking a break in the office!

It has been a real joy these last few days, meeting new students and reconnecting with returning students. Thank you for being a part of this joyful community! We, as always, appreciate you so much.

Sincerely,

Roz, Shannon, and Andy

2024 - 25 Electronic Device Policy

Teaching students to use technology safely and appropriately continues to be part of everyday learning; however, cell phones have proven to be a distraction in the classroom and detrimental to the learning environment. We are actively working to maintain the physical and mental health of our students, which has led to the re-evaluation of our cell phone policy. Given current research and data, we believe that removing the phone from the student’s physical presence is best practice. Students may freely use/access their phones before and after school. Our middle school students are assigned a computer each year, therefore, there is little need for additional personal devices.

Village School students grades three through eight will be required to place their phones in a locked box that will be stored safely by their home room teacher. An exception will be made for students who use a cell phone for medical needs. Teachers will return phones at the end of the school day. If a student needs to use their phone for legitimate reasons, they can ask their teacher to unlock it for them. However, students who need to call their parents will generally be referred to the office or a classroom phone for this purpose. Cell phones are not allowed for students in grades k-2, unless as a part of a medical plan.

We are hoping that this new procedure will reduce instances of inappropriate use of phones during transition times, reduce anxiety in students who don’t have cell phones or specific apps that other students have, reduce distractions, and increase community connectedness during the school day. Here is a link to a 500 student survey that found significant correlations between high cell phone use, anxiety, and lower grades.

IF YOU NEED TO CONTACT YOUR STUDENT DURING THE DAY FOR AN EMERGENCY OR FOR TRANSPORTATION ISSUES, CONTACT THE OFFICE AND WE WILL GET A MESSAGE TO THEM.

**Students who do not lock up their cell phones at the beginning of the day and are found to be in possession of their device will be required to lock it up and the class teacher will check in with a parent or guardian. The second instance, the device will be held in the office and a parent/guardian will be required to pick it up.

Headphones/AirPods

All electronic headphones are prohibited during the school day unless the student has a medical exemption, or when directed by a teacher.

Rose Ceremony

At the Rose Ceremony, the 8th graders welcomed each of the 1st graders with a red rose. This was the first year of having this ceremony in the new Courtyard. It's always very sentimental and moving to behold.

Village Kitchen

Left: Fourth grade student - Nicky - enjoys his first school lunch of the year. Fifth grade students - Irene and Theo - helped prep for banana oat breakfast muffins. The Village School Kitchen is in need of volunteers this school year!   Our model of food service is labor intensive and relies upon the input of parent help.

We would love to invite you into our space as we prepare and serve nutritious food to our school's students and staff. Working alongside other adult volunteers and kitchen staff is a great way to get to know our school community better and meet your volunteer hours quota.

We have a number of shifts we are hoping to fill throughout the school week. Most volunteers sign up for a 1-3 hours shift once a week. Some can commit to a shift every other week, others just once a month. Please email Toña at: taguilar@eugenevillageschool.org to get more information.

We have enjoyed serving breakfast and lunch to so many children and staff these first few days of the school year! Please note that students may either enjoy a sit-down breakfast in the Commons or take a breakfast snack bag to-go. We only receive reimbursement for one so are unable to provide both.

Have a great week!

Toña Aguilar

Donation Support for the Village Kitchen

Thank you so much to all the families who have turned in their supply fees, as well as kitchen donations!

Although Community Eligibility covers 90% of the school meal fees, it leaves the Village Kitchen to cover the remainder of the cost. We are seeking donation support from families to help make up the extra 10% cost. If you can donate $50, $100, $200 to the Village Kitchen, you can help us maintain our commitment to locally sourced, mostly organic ingredients. You can pay this via cash or check in the office. Thank you for your support!

Operation School Bell

The Assistance League of Eugene supports a program of student assistance called Operation School Bell. This program supports families who are experiencing financial hardship to shop at Fred Meyer for up to $130 on school clothes or shoes for their children.

This year the Village School has 12 spots available. If you would like your child to be included in Operation School Bell this fall please complete The Village School Parent/Guardian Request form .

The form needs to be filled out and submitted by Monday, September 16th. Since spots are limited, if we have more than 12 people apply we will run a lottery and notify you if you receive a shopping spot or not.

Picture Day

Picture Day is coming! This year we are excited to be working with Photo Faces Northwest. Please take a look at the schedule and ordering information below. Here is the link to order.

Village School Merchandise

Come and get your Village School T-shirts and Sweatshirts! We have a great selection to choose from of soft and cozy gear. Thank you so much to parent volunteer extraordinaire, Shannon Boyd, for ordering, organizing inventory, and creating the fabulous display in the office!

Volunteering at the Village School

Welcome to a fresh new school year! If you have not filled out a volunteer packet yet, please stop by the office to do so! Be sure to watch your email, the Village Voice and the Village Vine for messages from Parent Council, your class coordinator, your child's teacher and the Village School Kitchen, to see the volunteer needs that are coming up for you to take part in. We ask families to contribute 40 hours of volunteer hours per year, and single parent households to contribute 20 hours.

One of the ways to contribute to our school community is by attending Parent Council Meetings! The first meeting of the year is on Monday, 9/16 at 6:00 pm. Every parent and guardian's voice is valued in decisions about what Parent Council funds are used for, events that are held and collaborations with departments and teachers at the Village School!

*Please make sure to sign in, grab a volunteer badge, and sign out at the office when you volunteer

Please reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org with any questions about volunteering!
