Administrator's Message

Greetings Village 👻 Schoooooooooooooooooool 👻 Community!

What a fun, crazy week we’ve been having! Today we completed our pre Dia warm-up, the Halloween Hike. Thirteen staff members carved pumpkins for the staff pumpkin carving contest and we placed them around the school. Sixth grade students (and a couple parents) helped decorate the path between the pumpkins with spiders and skeletons and scarecrows and a haunted dollhouse and eerie lights. Each class took a hike around the campus and took a look at all the decorations and voted for their favorite pumpkins.

Here are photos of the winning pumpkins:

Humans have been celebrating on October 31st for over 2,000 years. Long before it evolved into Halloween, Celtic people celebrated Samhain as a final harvest festival and as a marker for a new year ahead. By the night of October 31st, the harvest was complete, the energy and light of the summer was done, and darkness began to fall over the land as the days grew shorter. Priests lit bonfires and held rituals to ward off spirits and people offered food to ancestors who had passed into the beyond. Samhain has evolved over hundreds of years, but one thing remains true: now is the time to stay nearer to home, because this is the point in the year when the divide between the supernatural and the physical worlds is thin, allowing spirits to walk among the living. Draw your people close because now is when people need community to make it through the cold and wet winter before us.

But wait, there’s MORE! Far across the globe in Mesoamerica, another tradition began when Aztek and Spanish customs and traditions mingled to create what would become known as Dia de los Muertos. Modern day Dia is celebrated primarily in Mexico, where families decorate an ofrenda with photos and mementos of relatives who have passed away. They also include food and drink for those who passed, to honor their lives and to ensure they are not forgotten.

Our Village School Dia de los Muertos Festival will be held on Wednesday, November 6th at 5:30pm. We will have a potluck, face painting, crafts, and a performance by Raices de Oregon-Baile Folklorico. It’s going to be an awesome party, be sure to mark your calendars.

Stay cozy!!

We are truly impressed at our school's Walk-a-Thon fundraising efforts. So far we have reached $21,000! The class that takes the 1st prize for the most funds raised is the 4th grade. We will have prizes for the 2nd and 3rd grades which closely followed. Regardless of how you look at it, all of the classes did a fabulous job in their fundraising.

We are still collecting pledges from our online venue VillageWalkathon.org and from the pledge packets. Please stop by the office if you need more materials.

Thank you very much for your participation - and thanks to all of our volunteers who helped make this such a successful, enjoyable event!

Volunteer Needs

Día de los Muertos is next week! We are getting excited! This is a whole family event that is free to attend, and filled with an array of crafts, face painting, and student and community performances. Please see the sign up sheets for volunteering and potluck contributions below. We have a few more spots that need to be filled!

We ask families to contribute 40 hours of volunteer hours per year, and single parent households to contribute 20 hours. This event is a great way to build on your volunteer hours!
